Chair Column - as published in Kenosha News November 24, 2007

Money.  It’s what all campaigns are asking for right now, and of course, there is a finite supply of it.  It is critical to political parties, campaigns, and our personal lives.  Some campaigns seem to have endless supplies of it, while others always seem to be asking for more.  It rules our political system and creates many fights in people’s homes.

Our governments collect their money through a variety of means, and must make decisions on how to spend it.  As a Democrat, I believe that the priorities should be in making access to our basic rights as Americans equal to everyone, whether it is education or health care.  It appears, however, that after the recent fiasco of more money for the failed war policies in Iraq and the president’s veto of children’s health care (and of course Paul Ryan’s support of our president’s veto) that our priorities are going in the wrong direction.

As veteran’s day recently passed, I want to assure you that I fully support and respect our brave men and women currently in service as well as our veterans, but I cannot support our federal government spending more money in Iraq at the expense of children’s health insurance.  Paul Ryan should be ashamed of his vote, and those writing in support of that decision in Voice of the People should reconsider what they believe in.

Adlai Stevenson, in 1952, said: “I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.”

The spring elections are right around the corner, and it’s important that we have an informed voting public.  This, of course, costs money and takes time.  I understand everyone’s time is limited, with many asking for it, but please use yours wisely, because voting against your own values isn’t going to help move our cities, villages, towns, county, state, or country forward.  After that, however, is the election that we are all getting a little fatigued with, and that is of course the presidential election.

Regardless of who you support (based on the bumper stickers I have seen so far it is Dennis Kucinich, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, or John Edwards), it is critical that you pick your set of values and vote it come next November.  If we are to see our country redeploy safely out of Iraq, resolve the health care crisis of ever increasing costs, begin to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and see a meaningful approach to our global climate change crisis, it’s going to be Democrats that lead the way.

Thank you for granting me a few minutes of your time for yet another month.  If you feel empowered by the work this party does, please become a member at: www.kenoshacountydems.com.  I simply couldn’t end a column that starts with the word “money” without asking for some of yours.
